so a technician is one who works at the task and the other is one who studies the subject

The derivation of 'technician' is 'technique' . It refers to a person who uses various techniques in his work, eg a laboratory or dental technician.

The deriviation of 'technologist' is 'technology' which is a science and a technologist is involved in the use of these scientific processes.
