We would like to sand and re-finish the wood floor in our summer house. Is this something that we do ourselves (fairly competant "do-it-yourself" folks in our late 50's) with a rented sander, or should we hire a professional?

This is something you could do, if you are as you say, (fairly competent...). Rent the sander and get it done. You'll also need a sander that will get into the corners and up close to walls and cabinets. There is a "refinish kit" you can buy at the big box stores that has all the finishing products you'll need.

It all depends on how much work you want to do. This isn't a particularly hard job, just tedious and hot. I'm doing my daughters this spring, a three story home and I'm handi capped. It's the poly that hard to put on. A longer and touchier job. Good luck with whatever you do.

Big job and age isn't the factor. We had to be very careful with the sander.
