Yes, of course.
He is the best playwright and the most creative English speaking poet to have ever lived.
Ignoring all the (I think) spurious theories about who actually wrote the plays and the fact that the plotlines may have been familiar re-used themes, you cannot deny that Shakespeare wrote expressions and quotes that we all still use sometimes unconsciously. He also invented many, many words that we still use today.

The body of literary produce attributed to Shakespeare is, to my mind, beyond "liking" or "disliking". It simply has a great literary, historical and cultural value. It is not something that we could easily leave aside.
IMHO, there are some plays that are not so interesting - e.g. The Tragedy of Coriolanus bores me to death and Romeo and Juliet annoys me beyond comprehension :)
But I do appreciate most of the comedies and I very much like Macbeth. I recently saw Hamlet here in France. Very interesting, done a bit in the manner of what a play was at the time of Shakespeare. Most of us were standing and some had seats on the scene :) Very amusing!

As a playwright and poet, Shakespeare can be adored by anyone who has read his works - and that includes me.
But, to 'like' him as a person, one should have had at least a few 'close encounters of the third kind' - that is, face-to-face meetings ! That is not possible, since Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 - some 391 years earlier.

Shakespeare is a great playright who can only be appreciated by reading his works when you finish school. When i was in school i despised him because you had to learn all his works, his themes, his visions and another 2 bookloads of information on him to the point it is overkill. Thats what turns a lot of people away from reading anything shakespearian. So my advice is grin and bear it now (if you are in school) then come back to it in a few years and read some of his works in an evening as light reading and you will find you will enjoy it for the most part.

I do...very much! His sonnets are so poignant, and his plays so very creative for the time they were written in! Its fascinating to me that his ideas are still so current, and his works so lasting that they are still being produced.
