Pom, now be nice. They don't get irony because they are accustomed to wrinkled clothes. They are comfortable with it because it matches their knickers. They can't afford satire for their garments, nor an irony for their other clothes.
It really reminds me of the story of the Emperor's new clothes. They are naked of wit as he was of humility from within, and it shows in their ways in public, in particular in complete lack of humour, when it comes to the finer points of irony and satire.
So, naked they were born, and when it comes to humour, naked they appear to remain, caught up in the notion that to be funny or amusing, entertainment must be completely devoid of higher cranial functions.

Because it is not always easy to recognize it.
Take this:
"Dutch Jews are nickers, pickers, killers, snakes and liberals."
(you can use double g instead of ck if your taste runs that way).
It may seem an anti-Jewish slur, but in fact it is a listing of Jewish denominations in the Netherlands.
Nicker= NIK'er, Ashkenazic/default orthodox
Picker= PiK'er. Sephardic orthodox
Killers = Neue Kille (historical),seen as forerunner of the Reform movement
Snakes=Sneek's (historical), seperate denomination in the city of Sneek (pronounce Snake), theological identical to NIK, but had different ideas about finances, just like the NK reabsorbed in the NIK)
Liberals=Well, Liberal Judaism.
There is a bit of irony in the statement, if you have all the background information, if you don't have it, you simply miss the tools to get the irony. Cross-cultural conversationis very likely to cause that.

Personally, I find people that don't get irony to be even more ironic than the tiron they didn't get in the first place....
