Manila rope was regularly used by Navy's and merchant seaman up into the 1970's. Made of fibers from the hemp plant, these ropes were strong and had a long life for maritime use. The rise in marajuana (derived from hemp) use and the increased production of nylon ropes have all but made the old "Manila" rope obsolete.

We grew a lot of hemp ( a member of the banana plant ) untill pot heads started smoking it. It has a great potential, for a great many things that would be beneficial to all of us, if it were not for that.
