People and cultures have different interpretations as to when Christmas is actually over. Some christian tradition follows the 12 days of Christmas which falls on January 6th and happens to be the Feast of Three Kings-then xmas is officially over and the decors should be out by then.
But I once celebrated the season in Japan and Christmas is over on the 26th and decors are out and should be replaced by New Year decors.
Other countries observe diff traditions and remove decors on the 1st of January to signify new life.
My advice is for you to follow the Christian tradition coz that's is where xmas started anyway-the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and ends on Feast of the Magis.

The 1st of Jan is tradition in my family, but my decorations were up until December 26th. The tree and the ornaments went down the 1st as well as the outside lights.

The tradition is after the 1st of the year so it would make sense to take down by the 2nd of January

Not only are mine still up, but they're still on too.
We usually leave them up for at least a few days after New Years. After that it depends. If it's really snowy or cold you should at least get the big free standing ones out of your yard, if you have any out there. But the house lights can wait for warmer, drier weather. And even if you leave them up til the summer comes, it's still good for a laugh! Last year I spotted one person who was painting their house with the lights still up - in August!!
It's so sad when the lights finally come down. Leave them up for as long as you feel comfortable doing so, and enjoy them.

I stop watering the tree the night before Christmas so when the Christmas tree starts to die (dropping tons of needles) I know it is time to take all the decorations down.

They must be taken down before the 12th day of christmas which is Jan 6th. It's tradition in my family therefore to take them down on Jan 5th.
