The rule, as always, is to stay away from those that ask you to pay before you can get these surveys.
Legitimate market survey companies such as Pinecone Research recruit members based on demographic characteristics -- e.g. mothers of babies 0-12 years old -- and will send surveys of products and services targeting this demographic group. Pinecone Research, however, pays only $5 per survey -- you're definitely not going to be rich with that. They can give you anywhere from 1-5 at most surveys in a month.
Other companies simply ask you to answer as many research as possible, and you don't earn anything just the chance to win at a raffle (which I find lame).

There aren't any that you will make any significant amount of money from. The ones that require you to pay up front and promise hundreds or thousands of $$$ per month are SCAMS, pure and simple.
There are a number of legitimate survey sites but most of the surveys are unpaid. The few that are paid might net you $100.00 on a good YEAR. Normally you collect points that are exchangeable for merchandise over an extended period of time -- typically several years to get enough points for anything more than a trinket or two.
You won't be approved for payment on most of the paid surveys either. They're aimed at a very narrow demographic and the offer of payment is made to get as many potential participants as possible in the hope that they'll attract enough of the target demographic to get a statistically valid response.
A couple of legit sites to look at:

Just remember that you are NOT going to make a lot of money with this. After you've been with the above 2 for about a year you might be invited to a few sites with slightly better pay opportunities but at best you're looking at $200.00 - $300.00 per year for the most part.
I've been doing on-line surveys for several years as an occasional pastime. As a diversion it's a bit of fun but you'll never make much $$$ doing them.

If you can join pinecone research, they used to pay $5 per survey. It was great. I wish I would have stayed a member of their panel. You need to find one of their banner ads to join.
mysurvey.com is ok too. It takes a bit more to make money.
