The idea behind revolutions is usuallu to improve one's state in life. The French Rev. was successful. It set up a republican form of government that has endured and continues to guarantee the rights of French citizens. The Russian revolution replaced the Tsarist Feudal system which oppressed most people and treated them as serfs - little more than slaves. The replacement, unfortunately was a marxist system which wasnt much better. People still had no rights, made very money, and had no say in their government. The next 70 years saw a series of brutal dictators (like Stalin) who killed Russian citizens with impunity. Secret police were everywhere. And if someone just happened to not like you, they could call the KGB and you'd be snatched from your home in the middle of the night and sent to a labor camp. No trial. No appeal.

Hope this helps.
