It starts with you and me! Can we bear to see the plight of those who have nothing and help! We will say "I dont have enough for myself!" Even a 2% contribution from our salaries will not make a a dent in our lifestyles! But we first stop to wonder whether it will be enough. Actually any amount is enough if we decide to adopt one family to provide ration and support e.g. Rs.1000/- per month for food supplies so that atleast basic needs are met. No need to give cash just provide the ration. We need to find such families and help them. It could be anybody (not beggars) a mochi (cobbler) in your neighbourhood, a maid, a sweeper in your locality etc. If nothing else sponsor the education fees, if you find your income insufficient explain your desire to another friend who will support you. One person at a time we all can do this. But it must start with us. Poverty can be erased if each of us thinks of someone else besides ourselves. We dont need lofty plans and we dont need to look to the govt to do something for the country. First of all me must be ready to accept that by helping someone someday the person will rise to our levels and help somebody else too! A drop makes an ocean! I am not writing this without practising, I know it does hurt during lean months when I too suffer from a cash crunch, but I find that God takes care of me during those days when I need the most only because I gave when someone needed the most!

Regards to all!

A very, very difficult question to answer, because there is no simple answer. Many things need to be done in tandem, and will require major shifts in government policies. A few ideas are (in no particular order);

1. Reduce Population Growth - fewer people require fewer resources; if a cake is cut into six pieces rather than twelve, each person gets a bigger slice. Admittedly a smaller population can produce less, but if this goes hand in hand with technology to improve productivity, it can work. Reducing populations is the only sustainable method, since any other solution (e.g. just improving agricultural productivity) eventually comes up against a brick wall (however much more maize you grow, eventually you will reach a maximum production level; if the population grows after this, people will starve.

i.Care for old people with pensions etc. - this reduces the desire of parents to have lots of children in order to provide for them in old age.

ii. Change the perceived role of women (educate and empower women). This paints them less as 'baby machines' and reduces the fertility rate (2 children per family is a tiny bit below replacement level).

iii. Provide contraception to protect against AIDS and also reduce population growth.

iv. Better health care ensures better survival rate and means fewer children required.

2. Reduce trade barriers
At the moment, poor countries have to compete with producers in rich countries (who have been provided with subsidies, allowing them to reduce their prices) and the tariffs put up to block imports of produce - these take a huge cut out of potential profits.

3. Microcredit - tiny loans to get people on the first ladder of economic development. This years Nobel Peace Prize was given for a microcredit pioneer.

There are a huge number of other things that need to be done, which many would argue are more important. The important thing to realise in relation to proverty reduction is that as I've said it's hugely complex and if there was an easy answer, there'd be no problem. Whether or not the rich world is genuinely interested in helping remains to be seen - though improving the lot of other countries is actually in the best interests of the rich world, as it increases the potential market for their products.

Hope that helps.

We can erase poverty from the world if we do our part... Its in the bible that it is our duty to help those who are in need. If only those who have the resources, that they know that its too much for them can be more compassionate towards the poor, that will make a lot of difference... Another thing, money is not the only way to help. We can do volunteer works. Especially in educating the young kids...For i strongly believe, POVERTY IS NOT THE HINDRANCE OF SUCCESS!!!!

You can't. Why? Because there will always be people who are not willing to work. There will always be people who want to work but can't find a job. There will always be people who work but do not earn much. God said the poor will always be with us. If it were possible to erase poverty from the world it would have been done already.

Well 4 trillion is floating around the world banks drawing interest, and helping only the banks. Just think of the education that can come from that source, education is the primary answer to the poor.

I don't think that is possible but If family members would take care of their own there would be less poverty in this country. I think our churches and individuals could help this problem a lot.

There will always be "relative" poverty.

But the poor will be better off the better economic growth is.

For example, the average poor person in the US or Europe today is much better off than a rich person in 1807.

This is wholly my solution to reducing poverty.
EMPOWERMENT.
that's the key word, you empower the downtrodden the ones under economic duress and the outcasts in the society.
One of the ways of doing so would be by is providing micro credit to them and encouraging to undertake entrepreneurial activities.
Education is another key word, education should be made more assessable and more vocational oriented to attract those who generally would avoid going to school.

Interesting question; reality there is no way as long as economics are the way they are. Economics is based on a systems of hierachy. The only way would be to abolish economics all together. Basically if we had a world catastrophe and we had to start all over building the world, we would all be on equal ground but there will always be someone who would rise to the position of power and therefore he/she will be richer than someone else.............its just human nature.
