Since the purpose of the interview is to get good thoughtful opinions and facts make sure the person is relaxed, ideally the interview should take place where he or she feels comfortable and no one else can hear the conversation. Try to get the interview face to face so you can observe body language, different tones in the interviewee’s voice, such as irony and excitement.

Writing good questions is crucial to achieve interview objectives and obtain valid responses. Be prepared to ask follow-up questions, such as "Could you tell me some more about that?" or, "What do you mean by that?" Particularly effective are questions that begin with "how." Beware of "why" questions at the beginning of interviews because they may put respondents on the defensive, leading them to justify their actions or opinions. Don't lead with sensitive questions - save those until after the person is well into the interview and comfortable.

Try to ask open questions: These questions require more information from the interviewed. Open questions help the person to go deeper and analyze why things are the way they are - what they like or don't like and why? It gives the him/her a chance to develop thoughts and opinions. If you must play devils-advocate then phrase it like "suppose a critic were to say".
If you hire a transcriber, explain how to format the interview according to your transcription rules. Be sure to check the transcription against the audiotape for accuracy. Providing transcribers with your interview questions is also helpful.
