The nucleus of a human cell contains around between 30 000 and 40 000 genes. These are carried on DNA which winds itself up inside chromosomes. Whenever a cell divides, the chromosomes in the new cell carry a copy of the original chromosomes.

A chromosome is about 0.004 mm long and contains a single piece of DNA that is about 4 cm long. This is about 10 000 times longer than the chromosome. So it has to twist and coil to fit inside.

We have 46 Chromosomes in our body, two less than cultivated tobbacco plants, and Gorillia's and Chimpanzees, who all have 48. Ferns have about 1200 chromosomes.

A dove only has 16, but a goldfish 104...and butterflies have 380.

Like many sexually reproducing species, humans have special gonosomes (sex chromosomes, in contrast to autosomes). These are XX in females and XY in males.

Human cells have 23 pairs of large linear nuclear chromosomes, giving a total of 46 per cell. In addition to these, human cells have many hundreds of copies of the mitochondrial genome. All of the human chromosomes have been sequenced and a great deal is known about each of them.

somatic cells have 46 chromosomes.. gametes only have 23 chromosomes... now each individual has a different number of cells... so there is no answer to this question unless you can answer how many cells a person has... and that would be really, really difficult

The nucleus of most human cells contains two sets of chromosomes, one set given by each parent Each set has 23 single chromosomes--22 autosomes and an X or Y sex chromosome.

Each human cell (appart from gametes, (i.e. sex cells), e.g. sperm) has 46 chromosomes.

Gametes have HALF this number, so they have 23 chromosomes each. And the human body has millions of cells, so the total would be huge :p
