Newer Series 2 or 3 TIVO units have no hard limits. Today drives can be installed of at least 400 GB which roughly translates to 400 Hours. AT some point, the operating system and the TIVO application itself begins to have difficulty addressing such a large database and structure. Some folks will say they have built 1000 hour (yes, thousand) unit with TWO 500GB drives installed. I would highly recommend going for a more traditional, 1 drive, 400GB config. 400GB drives can be found for $125 these days and can replace the existing drive in 1 hour:

I have a Tivo Series 1 with two 350 GB drives that holds 880 hours in basic quality.

it depends on your machine and at what quality you choose to record at.
