it has an on the fly switch on the dash board, i push it in and the light turns on but it doesn't seem to engage. what do i do to get it to engage?

there is probably a problem with either the controller or the engagment motor. under the car on the transfer case there is a little motor mounted on the back side.(usually on the left of the drive shaft) this is what engauges the transfercase into four wheel drive. after long peroids of non use they hang up. you can sometimes free them up if you lightly tap on in with a wooden dowel or rubber hammer.But TAP.....don't hit the damn thing they break pretty easy. if that dosen't work then check and make sure you have power there. check the relays also. if not then take it to a shop because it's the controller.

The 4wd switch just engages a clutch in the transfer case so you don't hear anything when it works. If the controlller or wires were bad the light wouldn't stay on because the transfer case position sensor would know it wasn't in 4wd. The lo range switch should give you an audible clunk when it engages.
