why do they need to be that tall? i mean. usaully a star isn't a short person, why?

Actually they are usually pretty short, at least most of the men are. Someone like John Wayne at 6'4" was unusually tall for and actor. Someone like Tom Cruise at 5'8" or 5'9" is much more common.

I don't think they are usually tall. There are some tall actors (Tim Robbins - 6'5", Brad Pitt - 6'0", Clint Eastwood - 6'2" and others). But there are also a lot of shorter actors (Tom Cruise 5'8", Antonio Banderas 5'7", Mark Wahlberg 5'8", Sylvester Stallone 5'9").
And of course, Vern Troyer is 2'8".
Like the rest of society, there are short and tall actors all over the place.
