I definitely feel that there are some women who are so insecure they cake on makeup and they just end up looking horrible.
The whole point of makeup is to enhance what we love about our features and try to make what we don't love less noticeable.
For instance, my eyelashes are light blonde. If I don't wear mascara it looks like I have no eyelashes. That makes me look weird. So I feel like I HAVE to wear mascara so I look normal.
I've tried going with the minimalist look, but then people close to me have made little comments like, "What did you do different? You look different?" or "Are you not feeling well today?" So chances are those women who pile on the makeup have had people say things to them so they feel like they have to wear that much makeup.
Also, I've noticed as women get older they tend to wear less makeup. I wore lots of makeup when I was in high school and since college I've toned it down quite a bit. Maybe women get more comfortable in their own skin as they get more mature?

So true, I hate it when guys say that because they will always prefer a girl made up. I think what they usually mean, though, is they hate it when girls wear too much makeup, like when they cake on the foundation and wear waaay to much eyeliner kinda thing. Just keep your makeup looking natural, make sure your foundation is the right colour for you and wear just enough so that you can highlight your best features but still look like you and you should be fine - perfect amount!

Makeup helps women a lot with their self-confidence and in the general sense, beautifies them (you may look at it otherwise though) Also the media definitely has a big influence on it as they look up to celebrities and the goals and definitions of pretty are rather unrealistic.
Yep I'm guilty of it as well, I find it hard to go to town without makeup, not necessarily heavy but yes I do feel naked without makeup and my self-esteem is not as high. Heheh :x

Some women use it as a guard...they don't feel pretty without it. ..............Me I've been wearing makeup since I was like 14 so I feel naked without it. All my friends call me the Porcelin Doll because my face is white as a ghost w/out it. But Hey I won't have as many wrinkles when I'm old because the makeup protects my face from the sun. haha

Easy question. Make up is like war paint.
It is really a response to very effective advertising by make up manufacturers.
Put your war paint on for the day. If you dont, you are vulnerable and everybody sees you for the wimp that you are.
Everyone can see how poor you are when you do not wear our famous dark blue eyeliner. LOL.
It is also a ritual. You wake up in the morning, clean your face, You have a few miutes more left to wake up. SO you dab and pat your face for the rest of those minutes.
Trust a guy to not understand.

every woman has her insecurities so by covering her flaws with makeup, she feels more confident. makeup actually gives us a facade of perfection which most believe is needed to be socially accepted. i think we're better off without makeup. sometimes, it's the vulnerability and flaws that makes us who we are and we shouldn't change that or we'll never learn to live with ourselves.

Women have been conditioned to believe that they need makeup to be pretty. We have spent our entire lives comparing ourselves to models in magazines who have been airbrushed into perfection. The idea ends up being, "if you don't look like this, you're ugly." Therefore, we overcompensate.

Because most girls feel better with it on, braver and more ready to face the world. And some of us are not that gorgeous without it, we need a little help.
