No. In my youth, Vietnam seemed long, but I did have to think of the history of previous military operations like those in the Dominican Republic 1916-24, Nicaragua 1912-33, and Haiti 1915-34 as comparable operations. And I'm old, but not that old. It seems, though, that people insist on comparing classic and symmetric wars with asymmetric military operations and pretending there's some valid time-line comparison between the two, for reasons that escape me.

Well...George Washington led a small force into western PA (it was then part of Virginia) in 1754 andthe French officer Jumonville was killed. So that could be looked upon as the first battle of the 7 yrs. war, and thus explains the 9 yr figure.

as someone else stated-- georrge washington led a band of colonists to fort duquesne (Pittsburgh) to evict the french and this started what would become the french and indian war. the english and colonists fought together here and it lasted from 1754-1763 here in america.

in europe the english fought the french also from 1756-1763 in what became know in europe as the seven year war. same combatants but different names due to the different theatres of war.
