your modem or router?
in the case of a modem one socket is marked phone or line. this is where you put the cable going from your modem to the phone or cable socket (in the case of broadband (in the UK at least) you need to connect your dsl filter to your wall socket and connect your phone where it says phone and the computer to the other socket.
now on the modem or router you will see a socket labeled computer (may be a picture) connect one cable there and the other to the back of your computer (depending on the modem or router) this will be either USB or Ethernet.

now you know how to connect, remember not to conect anything to your computer until told to do so during the set up program you run from the install CD.

follow the connection instruction and let the software run to completion and when done you should be able to connect and get online.

If it is a ADSL modem with ether and usb then the blue cable is probably USB and the yellow Ether.
If your computer has a lan port which isn't being used for network purposes then use the yellow (ether) if not use the blue (USB).

There should also be a cable to conect the modem to a telephone socket (usually black).

If the modem only has Line and USB then use both.

The blue one will be the USB connection, the yellow ETHERNET
if you have both options go with the latter, and its router not modem

it is a small 9pin oval shaped socket (male) at the back of your pc,and has two little screw/bolts 1each side of your modem to pc lead*------------------ plug, unless you are using USB connectors? and also a telephone lead plugs/clips into the back of your modem/pc and another telephone lead goes from your modem to the wall tel/socket
