When I had a gas stove, I would spray the top with water, let it soak for a while. Then when the dishes were done, I could easily clean the stovetop. If I do that with an electric stove, will it damage the electric elements?

No, it shouldn't. Try not to spray the elements though and make sure the burners are off. Sitting water in the elements could cause a short so be careful. You can remove the burners before you start, spray, clean and replace. You can actually wash the burners if you want as well. Again, remove them first. Have fun.
