It would be a good idea to look at the Top 100 names lists and then you can see which names are at the top and can then avoid your child having the same name as 20 other children.
Are there any books or films that you like? maybe you could adapt a character's name.
Wait until the child is born and have a good look at their face, see if any strong personality traits are emerging. You have 45 days to register so take your time.

I'd suggest avoiding the top 30 or so names - there's bound to be at least one of those in your kid's class in school.
Bear in mind that trends for kids names change over time so what was fashionable 10 years ago is now really unfashionable.
For example, people in the UK are increasingly using what were considered old fashioned names again - so Arthur, Samuel & Alfie are all once again popular boys names here.
Finally I'd suggest considering a name related to your cultural background - my wife's Welsh so we picked Seren for our daughter. It's unusual but not unheard of and, above all, we just liked it!

I would wait until it comes out - until my daughter was born the only boys name we had was Scooby Doo! Girls names were a bit easier but as I wanted strong classic names it was not too difficult. But until Charlotte was born it was still up in the air - I think that is quite normal (have friends who had decided on one name but when they went to register her changed their minds!)
Good luck with the birth - had baby Charlotte 8 weeks ago (6 weeks prem) had an easy time - 4.5 hour labour and no stitches - be optomistic it isn't half as daunting as some people make out.

Sheryl there are loads of websites that suggest baby names and some even give the origin of the name and it's meaning. Try a search engine, you'll have no end of choices.
If my wife and I had been lucky enough to have had children, a boy would have been called Robin and a girl India or Ocean.

Pick something that captures your imagination.
When I first got pregnant, my BF and I were watching the film "King Arthur" with Clive Owen, Keira Knightley etc and my BF said "What about Arthur as a name?" I wouldn't have thought of it myself, but the more I thougth about it after that the more I liked it. It was Celtic and British and Historical and suited our background (I'm Welsh, BF's English), plus sounded a but different (no one else calling their kids Arthur at the moment!) and cool because it was different!!!
Arthur is 5 weeks old now and his name really suits him!!!
Pick something that gets your imagination and suits your background and don't mind what anyone else says about it being too old fashioned/too outlandish etc. You can bet when the baby's born they'll all change their tune and say they love it!

I'd suggest you find a book of names and choose one that fits well with your surname! You dont want to end up with a name like Annette Curten, Polly Parrot or Teresa Green!
It also helps to choose a name you like the shortened version of.
I thought I'd beaten that by giving my daughter the already shortened version 'Terri' but people even shorten that to Tez which I hate!
Good luck finding just the right name!

some hospitals sell name books in the gift shop---you never mentioned what sex the baby will be ---or maybe you don't know yet---having three children and two grand children----most people lean toward tradition --naming after a parent or grand parent---or a connection to the family---but like in the sixty's they gave names of freedom and expression---star---moon---for example---some go by the day of the week---modernly people are making up new names now a days---using last names as a first name---
