I don't have a problem with it if they are strictly used for emergencies only. They don't need to be calling friends and such. Remember when mom used to send you out with a quarter to make a call "just in case?" It is the same principle, since pay phones are almost obsolete now.

I know that a lot of parents that work like their children to have them. However kids now days are using the phone to sms during class. I know that there are many schools that have banned them. But the way I look at it, if the child is in school the child is safe and if an emergency comes up the school will notify the parent. My goodness, I went to school for 12 years and no phone and I am still alive.

As an elementary school teacher they are absolutely not needed. There are phones in most classrooms and in the office that can be used if they forgot their lunch, not feeling well, parents are late, etc...
The only reason I could see them being used in middle school or high school would be for after school if they are walking home or need to be picked up. They don't need them at school. Most kids use them to cheat anyways. If anything they should be for emergencies only.

Yes, as long they do not use it in class rooms.
The problem with mobile phones is they undermine teacher's authority and they encourage bullying. My aunt's a teacher.
My aunt told me that she reprimanded a pupil for not doing her homework and gave her extra assignments. The pupil then phoned up her mother and then the mother phoned up the school and complained to the school!
Moreover, like I said, bullying by mobile has become a problem. What bullies do is they wind up a teacher and then film their reaction. In turn, they upload the footage to a video website. They do the same to pupils. Only in some cases, they use violence.
Mobile phones makes teachers' job more difficult.

in my experince as a tecaher it seems that cellphones are a good thing to have on hand, in case of REAL emergencies (although kids ahve their own definitions of emergencies sometimes).. although if they are not left off and out of sight furing the day can cause disruptions, result in theft, or worse...

Definitely. We have to drive to my school bus stop as the bus stops no where near our house.
I was once stranded there for over an hour, because I had no phone to call my mum and tell her that my after school club had been cancelled.
Not fun.

YAH DUDE THEY SHOULD . WHY? BECAUSE IF THEY ARE WALKING HOME AND SOMEONE KIDDNAPS THEM ,THEY CAN CALL FOR EMERGENCY. LIKE AT LIBRARIES ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN THERE BECAUSE OF HOW QUIET IT IS AND PEOPLE DON`T ACTUALLY KNOW WHEN DANGER IS COMING. SO IT IS ALWAYS SAFE FOR KIDS TO BRING CELLPHONES BECAUSE DANGER MIGHT EVEN HAPPEN AT SCHOOL. AND IF SOMEONE PICKS YOU UP AND THEY ARE REALLY LATE AND YOU GET WORRIED YOU CAN JUST CALL THEM AND MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE WILL BE PICKING YOU UP. THANKYOU
