Because someone must have the authority to call a new election or "swear-in" the new Prime Minister.
Just like in UK - our legislature are the two Houses of Parliament but HM the Queen is Head of State.

Yes , because India has a Parliamentary Constitution , the Leader of the majority party in Parliament is called upon to form the Government . However , the President is , supposedly, the Head of the Executive , & all government business is carried on in his name -- under his signature . However, he is only the titular head , as he is not elected by the people directly , but only through an 'Electoral College ,'
