Yes, in all cases I am aware of socialism leads to the concentration of power in the hands of the government as the masses become dependent on and thus unwilling to oppose that government, even if atrocities are being committed.
The checks and balances on our government, which includes a lot of socialism along with capitalism, helps prevent any one part of the government from becoming too powerful and unresponsive to the people. We presently are being challenged by the US Supreme Court's growing tendency to creat law instead of just interpretting the law and the Constitution as written. A great danger in this is the concentration of power in the hands of the 9 justices, or even in five. If something in the law or Constitution needs to be changed then Congress needs to change that, not the Supreme Court.
Socialism in moderation is a good thing. It's not easy to keep it moderate once the people of a democracy realize they can vote themselves money instead of working for a living. The problem is that most people need to be willing to work hard or else there will be terrible shortages in products. Capitalism rewards hard workers. Socialism rewards mediocrity and punishes hard work by taking away from those who earn more by working harder and giving it to those who are unwilling to work. It's important to have a system of justice to stop people in any economic system from robbing the poor.
If there was no socialism at all then there would be a lack of compassion for the sick, injured, handicapped, and elderly. One great thing about the United States is the charitableness of the private citizens who are generous in sharing their wealth. No country is more charitable than the United States when you take into account private contributions.
Challenges presented by socialism can be overcome, but we need to watch closely to prevent the corruption that comes from too much power in the hands of too few people.

The misperception about socialism is that socialist nation are taking away more money from hard working people than those who works less. Which is not true. People are thinking that hard working people equals rich people. That is not true. People tend to think if you work hard then you will get rich. Which is also not true. And if you are rich then it means that you have been working very hard. This is also not true. The reality is socialism is when they are taking away more money from rich people than from those who are less rich, making people's opportunities from the working class equal to the rich people's opportunities.
Another misperception about socialism is that a nation will be governed by a few. But socialism is not about who and how many that will govern, it is about welfareness to all its citizens. Socialism can work with democracy as good as capitalism can.
Third misperception about socialism is to think that it does not give incentives to do more than expected. This is not true at all. There is nothing wrong or against socialism to give bonuses to those who do more than expected of them. So basically socialism do not corrupt the government no more than capitalism does.

Socialism is one of those wonderful political ideas that work well in theory but fails in practice.
People work hard to better themselves and to provide comfort and security for their families.
If they are not rewarded for hard work and effort, or if their wealth is going to be "redistributed" to others, then what is the motivation ? By nature, people are not altruistic.
I don't know where you live, but in Britain most o the people who advocate "socialism" do so from the comfort of very large houses in the nicest suburbs. I seldom see them taking in homeless families or giving their excess wealth to charity.
Socialism is a fraud and a nonsense.

Socialism corrupts the government, because control is taken away from the people. People respond badly because there is a lack of incentive to do anything more than the law requires. Read about the Soviet Union and it's terrible economy.

Socialism and socialist idiologies and principles (for example state funded projects) are responsible for nearly every single notable achievement of either America or Britain.
