I'd go for a larger internal drive too.(this will invalidate your warranty though)
There are quite a few 'how to' guides on the internet, so google away. One issue seems to be the spin up speed of the replacement drive - if it's not quick enough it wont work.

You can easily replace the internal hard drive for a bigger one like I have done. Its really easy to do to. Just take the cover off, take the old drive out, same method as with a PC, just unplug the ribbon cable and power supply. Put the new bigger drive in. You will need to go into the system menu on your SKY box and reformat the drive. Then the job is done. I dont think you can plug an external drive in though. Considering some HD movies take 10% it is worth doing! Hope this helps!
