I mean - I was really excited to see this film. My friends loved it and so I had was all prepared for a feel good comedy - chick flick.

Okay - now I put this film in my Forrest Gump category. I nearly threw something at the tele - the idea that a woman cannot be successful and maintain a happy life outside the workplace? Didn't we get past this in the 70s?

I mean - I felt duped - I had seen this movie in the 80s already - only it starred Michael J Fox and was called Secret of My Success - oh right, the ending was different - the male lead usurps the boss and takes over the company. Hmmmm.

I thought maybe I was reading too much into things. Maybe I should give it more of a chance. But then, when Hathaway's boyfriend gets a job - promotion - in another city, the implication that it is okay for her to follow him, was cringe worthy. Would this film have had a different ending with Aston Kutcher as the star? Any other thoughts?

I couldn't agree with you more-I was very disappointed with the movie. Thought it was Hollywood schlock.

It was just you. It didn't seem like any of the characters that were slaving away in the industry were happy...look at the designer guy, (forgot his name, the one that gives Hathaway's character a makeover) And the good-looking guy that made the bag. The owner of the magazine that wanted the french editor because she would work for less money...I think the theme was based more along the lines of success will change what things are important for each individual...not necessarily that a woman can't be successful and happy. That is why Hathaway had to quit...the success was changing her ideals and ethics and she didn't like what she was seeing. It wouldn't have been believable if Streep's character was successful, a bi**h AND happy as can be. I didn't get that Hathaway's character was going to follow the boyfriend either. To me, it seemed like she knew she would find something...but that that particular relationship would have to be either on hold...or let go. She doesn't say "hey let's pack up I am going to Boston!" Doesn't she get a job with a small magazine//newspaper something that looks like a dump? I just assumed that was still in NY.

I think this movie was really typical of working in a pressure industry - like fashion or media. Having worked in this environment I can tell you the games and overwork is no joke - its very real. And like the girl in the movie, I chose to leave it behind. The freebies are exciting but working 6 and 7 days a week is absolutely no life. I now work for a finance company and yep its boring but the hours are normal and I walk out and leave it all behind each night. I make good money and I have a life too - theres no way I would slave away for someone else now. The only time I will ever work so hard again is when I start my OWN business......

Michael J. Fox slept with the wife of the boss who turned out to own the company. He wasn't a success on his own. The whole premise of The Devil Wears Prada is that after a whole year of putting up with Miranda (who unfortunately does exist in the workplace) Anne Hathaway becomes successful on her own. Between the two movies, The Devil Wears Prada gives women more credit for their achievements.

I loved it! I didn't see it as being about the woman not being able to be successful and maintain a happy life outside the workplace. I just saw it as a "person" who spent her whole life concentrating on her job - above all else. A "workaholic" so to speak. When you do that, it can cause your family life to suffer. I thought it was cool that Ann's character decided to choose family (or her relationship) over work. I was married to a workaholic for 11 years and it was no fun, believe me.
