How do you interpret this poem?

Once as a patron of war
Attacked by power and greed
Life stolen
Taken away
Never to be returned
But the memory remains unserved.

Once as a believer
Prosecuted for uniqueness
Burning, flames engulfing,
Torture, life made worthless
Said to be no more than dirt
Yet faith remains.

Once as a pure one,
In a city of filth
Watching loved ones
Dying, rotting
Sitting helplessly
But the affected remained gone.

Once as a lover
Filled with joy and harmony
Closeness and fulfillment
Screaming, begging, reaching out
Losing grip, blackness,
Yet the truly loved remain forever protected

To me it reads that long after we are gonedead we are still about living forever in the memories of others for the things achieved.

I think this poem means, people think power is everything. such as being selfish, greedy ect. they just don't know how to use it. either for the right or wrong.
