I have bought a couple yards of cheap material almost 3 months ago and they still have an annoying pungent smell
I have heard using baking soda will help, is it true? got any other ideas?

did you wash it?? its the dyes or formaldahyde that they set the dye with, you can put baking soda in the wash when you wash it, or white vinegar, both things help remove body odor and such. also febreeze spray might help, and hanging on a clothes line outside or fence and let it air a while.

From the look of things, you haven't washed it. Just wash it with washing powder and rinse with fabric softener, then air dry it. No dout it will do the trick.
