Yes, but you have to show great potential, very difficult to get in that way.

Not really. Aside from specialists such as kickers or maybe a speedy punt returner, you _need_ a player who has years of instruction at an organized level.

The only way I would see player getting in is a high school player who moves on to a semi-pro or arena team, then on to Europe or Canada and finally the NFL. But given how short the careers of football players are compared to other sports (10-15 is the longest versus 15-20 for hockey, basketball and baseball) it's unlikely. Also, any player with real talent will get a college scholarship, _and_ if they can't read (they only reason they wouldn't get a scholarship) they wouldn't last in football anyway.

If you take Canadian football seriously, we have an alternative system that players use to reach the CFL, called junior football. Most of the teams are based in cities without colleges, or if they are, they are near colleges and universities that do not have college ball teams of their own.

Those who play junior football usually fall into three categories:
1. They couldn't afford a top university which has a football program. Most are based near smaller schools with lower tuition costs.
2. They aren't smart enough to go to college or can't afford to go to college and hold full time jobs on the side. Many who do this go to college during their CFL careers, since the season is June to November, leaving the January to April semester free.
3. They want to lengthen their amateur careers. Many know coming out of high school that they'll never play pro ball, so they go to junior football first (restricted to 18-23 years olds) and then go on to university ball and can play _five_ years in the CIAU. I've seen several players who are 26, 27, and 28 still playing college ball.

Don't listen to most of these answers. I remember a few players who didn't play college football and made the team, and I'm not talking about kickers. I can't remember their names but I remember one guy played on the offensive line. It is very uncommon for a guy that didn't play college ball to make it but it happens sometimes. If you can show a team in tryouts that you have a lot of potential, you can make it. Now in days, you could play in Europe, or Canada and do good their and get a shot at playing in the NFL.
