I am assuming you mean a PC (personal computer) game, in which case I recommend Guild Wars. I had never played PC gaming, so I didn't want to pay a subscription fee. GW has free online play, and there are 3 chapters so far (each spaced app 6 months apart... next one due out April 2007). Each can be played individually or linked, and there are so many chances to personalize your game (first with choosing a character, and appearance, then how you will choose to play). You can play alone, using AI henchies (they can be frustrating sometimes, but once you know how to handle them they can be nice), you can also group with real people all over the world. You can utilize a friends list, along with an ignore option, and you can join or make a guild. You also can choose how in-depth you want to play the game. You can get titles for mapping percentages of the map, and mastering missions, along with many others.
If you want an idea of how this game looks, and want to see a great resource, go to guildwiki.org . They cover the events (we just finished Wintersday 2006), quests, missions, armor etc. (This way you can see whether the storyline and characters appeal to you before you invest in the game). I have also attached the game's official website, so that you can get a feel for it.
Whatever you decide, good luck and happy gaming.

I recommend Adventure Quest:
http://www.battleon.com/
It's free, but excellent. You might want to upgrade to Guardian, though. It's hard to get on the free server at times. Guardians have their own server, and the cost is a one-payment only deal. You get access to more armor, weapons, sheild, spells, pets, and items because you can get into the Guardian Tower when you're a Guardian.
They're adding stuff all the time. The most recent additions are Z-Tokens (a seperate money system from the regular gold that you normally collect), and Player Houses (bought with Z-Tokens).

Start with something easy. For a console, Kingdom Hearts is a good easy learning one. I like all the Final Fantasy games and Diablo 2 for the computer is fun too.

it all depends on what kind of RPG's your are talking about
if you want a good free MMORPG, play Runescape(www.runescape.com), you get to play it as much as you want and when you want even more, you can upgrade for just $5 a month
dont play MU...whatever you do, dont play it
its fun at first but after a while it gets so boring because all you do is fight monsters and get armour upgrades
thats just one skill where compared to Runescape, it has 30 completely different skill ranging from woodcutting to mining to cooking to magic and so on....
YAY- congrats to me! this answer just got me LVL 3!
