Whoa Up There Cowboy!!
The dang fools just gotta try. They don't know what they are thinking. That's why the blame fools come on here an ask the rest of us sensible types.
Where I lived when I had horses the farriers were scarce I couldn't get one out to my horses every time they needed a little trim. So I learned how to file them down enough to get my poor creature through until the farrier could get back around to us.
Not everyone owns a high performance horse that needs their hooves dialed in to the exact degree.

I don't see anything wrong with becoming your own farrier. As long as you get the right training though. There are quite a few great schools out there. I plan on going sometime this year. We own 22 horses right now and to keep them trimmed up is pretty costly. Plus, some of the farriers I have used don't get along with my horses what so ever. If I do them I believe they will stand a lot better.

Travis you really need to chill out. I don't know how many years experience you have with horses, but apparently you don't have all that many years experience with people. Granted people not knowing what they are doing keeps a lot of trainers busy, but that's no reason to knock someone for wanting to learn. I would much rather people ask these questions then, go out and try this stuff on their own without having any input from a knowledgeable horse person. I've fixed horses that some first time owner messed up, but that doesn't make me tell first time owners not to try at all. It makes me want to help them more to keep them from making the mistakes that others have made. Information about horses is very valuable, from any source. John Lyons, Clinton Anderson, whomever. Don't get me wrong, there is NO cookie cutter way to train a horse, and some people just will not get it, but that doesn't mean that everyone will not get it. Take what you can from each of them and add it to your growing tool kit, and trust me it always grows. I've been doing this for over 17 years, and if a day goes by that I haven't learned something new, then I wasn't doing my job right that day. All of us at one time or another were that first time owner and that first time trainer. No body was born owning and or training a horse, even if you grew up on a horse farm.

By learning to do it for yourself you can then save money by taking care of your own horses and make some extra by taking care of a few others. It is a craft which can be learned and therefore if you have the motivation to do it then you can and will get the necessary training and proper tools to be able to work on your horses feet. My son works with a farrier he helps him and is learning the craft. Instead of being paid in money the farrier is buying my son the tools he will need. So if there is a will there is a way.

I don't know but I want to learn how to basically trim my own horses feet so I can keep up on all 12 of my horses because my farrier and only come around every couple of months. He is sooo busy traveling all over my state that he only can fit me in when it's time to replace the shoes on my barrel horse. We only have one farrier in this area and he services about 5,000 horses no joking. I have to plan months in advance to see him. Not all of my horses need shoes and I wish I could keep their feet trimmed when he can't visit my farm. I understand how much training a farrier does to be good at his job but I just wish I could do the basics for my other horses so they would be more comfortable.

have you read the other questions on here from people that are actually serious questions? someone last night wanted to put a rubber band on their rott pup to dock the tail. it explains why the world is the way it is. be patient and hopefully if we can educate one person from doing something stupid and inflicting pain on a helpless animal because they don't know any better, our time here was well spent? lol probably not, but keeps me going.

Because after they jack up his feet they will put him in a pasture and conveniently forget he now needs to see a vet.
Hopefully he will have neighbors that will report him to the humane society.

There is nothing worse than a knowledgeable person with no people skills. If you know something and want to share it with others, do so in a non-insulting manner or don't do it at all, JA.
