I lived in Miami for two years. It's good to have some apprehension. It just means you'll be more watchful of your surroundings. When downtown, never travel alone. Not that Miami is a bad place to walk, but that's common sense. In school try to find some local students that have knowledge of the area and can give you feedback of where to go, how to get there. Just take it slow for starters if you are nervous. I spent most of my time on the beaches, usually Key Biscayne or Hollywood areas. The water is aqua, the sand very white. You'll soon unwind under the sun and you'll see that everything will be all right. You don't have to be a party girl to enjoy yourself on the beaches, too. Again, the main rule is don't go out alone until you feel self-assured about your surroundings and how you can handle them. Have fun in Miami, it's an interesting place.

Well, honestly, the traffic can be a bit tricky, so take it slow until you get used to it. You didn't say where you are going to live, but the rush hours are the time you may choose to stay off the streets, at first, if your schedule allows for that. It is fast paced and people can be rude, so drive defensively.
As far as the crime, it's like every other big city, just be aware of where you are and if out at night, have a friend along. You'll learn where not to go, as said above (Overtown, Liberty City, etc.).
As for the party girl thing, you can choose what you want or don't want to do...no worries there. The weather is great, beaches are beautiful, always something going on around town. And as said above also, it is predominately Spanish, but most people speak English, too.
Welcome to Miami!!

Like any big city you have to be aware of your surroundings but Miami is a relatively safe place. You need to be a defencive driver, Miami is a crazy place for traffic especially with the multi cultural population there it can get pretty frustrating. But overall Miami is a great place to live, the weather, beaches, night life are great, there's always something to do.
Stay away from certain areas such as Liberty City, Over-town and parts of Downtown at night. Try to go out with friends or as a group its safer. The public transportation system is pretty good depending on where you live I lived there for 20 years and the last few years I was there I did not use my car i relied on public transportation and really had no difficulty in getting around.
You'll enjoy Miami it's safe enough and there's always something to do. Good luck and enjoy.

Hey, don't worry! You'll be fine, it's okay to feel nervous...I'm sure you'll meet a lot of nice people in MIU and you'll just have to ask and everyone will be happy to help you. There are other things in Miami than just party, and crime is everywhere in the world not just in this city. You'll get used to the traffic, everybody does, so don't freak out there are worse things in life, and be proud of yourself for taking such a big step!

nicely, Miami isn't all that large first of all. there is not lots of a cultural existence right here. specific, there are human beings from different cultures and whatnot, yet there isn't any easily "cultural existence" right here such as you detect in different super cities. And downtown Miami is disgusting and unsafe at night, while in different cities the downtown section is the region to be on weekend nights. perhaps you moved to RURAL usa. yet even in a state like Ohio, city existence isn't lots different from Miami (different than for the huge sort of distant places-born citizens of Miami).

I think you do have a reason to feel this way! I mean your environment and things you are used to are definitely going to change and I personally would be nervous too. Especially in Florida with hurricanes hitting that state all the time it would get me very scared and I would certainly not attend college there or live there! Sorry I don't mean to get you more nervous but that's just my opinion. But you never know maybe it will turn out to be a great experience for you. Good Luck.

Mind your own business and no one will bother you. Don't worry, be happy! Miami can be a party town or a quiet sit on the beach and do some art work. Relax. You're going to love it. You'll meet kids just like you.

OK, you just started driving & you are moving to a metropolitan area from the country ?
Mostly use public transit , & drive early on Sundays until you get used to it.
As for party thing , If it is not you - don't , It is that simple.
There should be plenty at school to keep you busy and learn about the "street" stuff from them . . . not in person.
If you want to succeed in school , get home relatively early and back to school early.
In time you will become comfortable with the urban environment AND it never hurts to take some maritlal arts classes too !

Your anxiety is quite common. You're moving into unknown territory. You should maintain a high state of awareness and an open mind. There's so many different cultures in Miami and you should look at that as an opportunity to learn some neat things. Most people don't want to leave once they've moved there, so who knows, you may become a Miamian. Have fun and good luck.
