There's the easy way or the hard way.

The hard way is to submit your manuscript (actually just a couple of chapters, including the first) to a bunch of literary agents. You can find these in the Writers Yearbook (available at amazon, and your local bookstore). Most publishers don't accept fiction submissions (actually most agents don't now, but the Yearbook has details). Then if they like it, they'll become your agent, and represent the book to the publishers. If they like it, you'll get a publishing deal. Its a long, hard, miserable process, and it gets harder every year.

The easy way is to go somewhere like Lulu.com that does self-publishing without a big initial investment. Get your book nicely laid-out, submit it, then start promoting it online. If you can build up some interest and some sales, then you still want the mainstream publishing deal, the agents are _much_ more likely to talk to you, and publishers will be able to see the potential based on the sales you are making. Its also common for publishers to be interested in working with you on your next book, rather than picking up the rights to your self-published work.

Okay so the second route isn't easy either. But it has the advantage that you get a copy of your book in print, to be proud of (and to motivate you to keep writing). Your friends and family can buy a copy, and if things go well (and you put the effort into promoting it), a publishing deal is still possible.

It takes a long time to develop your writing skills, and the more you can do to keep your motivation and your desire high (and IMHO self-publishing is good for that), the more likely you are to keep going until things work out for you.

Good luck, and keep writing!

Hi, I heard a book on tape written by a 12 year old! The boy who wrote The Outsiders was 14! What you need to do is make sure you write a good synopsis, a letter to a publisher (you can go online and find guidelines) and of course a great story read and re-read for silly mistakes. Also, make sure the publisher you send it to publishes books in the genre you have written or they won't even consider you, there are hundreds of publishers, just find the right one. Let them know you are serious and you will make it. Good luck. Hope this helps.
