Bears are over 30. Cubs are under 30.
The terminology just applies to age - not appearance, hairyness, body shape, nor does it relate to sexual role play.
A gay man who is a bear is just older, that's all. A 'cub' is younger.

Usually it's an age difference but some also define it by the amount of body hair found on the chest, I've been called a bear by some and a cub by others.... Contrary to another posters misinformation, there is no actual age definition.

It is a self labeling thing.
I'm big, older and furry and a bear.
I tend to like younger smaller guys, smooth or hairy. The smooth ones are generally considered cubs and the furry ones are otters.
BUT I've seen other guys use different definitions.
The "bear community" is typically as full of silly games as the drag community or the leather community....so I avoid it like the plague.

I think, therefore I am.
What defines a person is what they consider themselves to be. Don't worry about catagorization. Just because they are big and hairy doesn't make them either if they don't think they are.
In short, what defines a gay man as a bear or a cub is his self definition. Ask him. You might be surprised when he answers neither!

Bear = large, usually older, hairy dude; usually dominant member of the pair
Cub = young, often smaller and smooth partner of bear; assumed (but not always) the submissive partner

2 things: Age and Role.
A cub is young, a bear is older.
A cub is usually submissive, a bear is usually dominate.
