Alcohol and drugs are the reasons for experimentation of alcohol and drug use among teens. Parents are the tools to limit their use.

Yes, and no. My parents are both alcoholics, my brother and I are not. Although we both experimented in "light" drug use, neither of us ever became addicted. Addiction and the dangers of it was something my brother and I were all too aware of at young ages. We saw what it did to our parents and I'm sure that was always in the backs of our minds as teens.
Even odder still, is my son is a teenager now but does not use or experiment in drugs. For one thing he's too busy. He's very focused on what he wants to achieve and simply doesn't have time for drug use. I know he's not hiding drug use because he's either be OVER acheiving for his age or UNDER achieving....he's doing neither. He's right on target.

Some will say that if the parents did drugs or abused alcohol the kids are bound to. I say that's bunk.
Some say that if parents are too strict and ban their kids from drugs or alcohol the kids will feel compelled out of some "forbidden fruit syndrome," I say this is much more likely a scenario.

They can be, especially if they are either abusive or drug/alcohol addicts themselves, or if they are extremely forceful in banning alcohol/drugs, thus making them risky to use and giving their teens a rush of freedom feeling when they try to use them, just as teens get rushes of freedom when they try to break the law just for the sake of it, break school rules, etc.

In a way, drug use or alchohol is usually associated with filling a void or emptiness in your life. If it were filled with family and friends you would feel no need to turn to them. That does'nt mean you wont experiment with some of the lesser drugs, just means you less likely to be "hooked".
