From fireplace suppliers, you can get a bag that inflates to fill the space but leaves a gap for ventilation. Worth looking into that.
Don't block with newspaper etc, cos you can guarantee someone will forget to reomve it before lighting a fire!

The house that I lived in with chimneys all had "CHOAKS". This is a door built in the chimney that works on a lever system. Its about 12 in up inside that chimney just reach in and try to find the lever.

u cannot block up ur chimney.it willcause condensation.u will have 2 brick up ur fire-places and include a vent-brick in the bricking-up about 2ft.up from the floor in the centre of the chimney -breast. C.U.skullduggery

if you burn any fuels that the smoke goes up that chimney then you cannot block it at all.

Is it still used ? DON'T !
If it is abandoned, block it totally and make sure the fireplace is listed as nonfunctional should you sell.

rearrange your furniture with the back of a couch facing it. i knew someone who did that. and rearranged it again during summer.
