Not only ghost but also spirit as in Zeitgeist "the spirit (Geist) of the age (Zeit)", meaning the intellectual and cultural climate of an era.

Just to cover all, here are a few more that are not German options for "Geist"

An Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language: in which the words are explained in their... - Page 5
by John Jamieson - 1818 - 434 pages
GEIST, s. 1. An exploit; Lat. gesta. Douglas. 2. The history of any memorable action. Douglas.
GEIST, GEST, s. 1. A joist, S. Doug. 2. A beam. Barbour. ...

Later: BAHR-GEIST as in Sir Walter Scott's discussion of the term: which he notes as difficult to define. Gaelic and earlier "ghost" issues are discussed.

The word is also in old Welsh and Irish Aire Coti: "Art of goverment, policy" or in Welsh: "dog"

I believe in or near Norfolk there was a "Geistwick" and a "Geist Church".

I believe it's German for ghost. Hopefully you don't make it a habit of scaring people.
