You will need to reinstall XP itself & then use the backup feature to access & restore all the settings, data & programs.

1.You need an external drive for this.
2. Get a drive imager software like Norton Ghost.
3. Reformat your drive
4. Install ALL the applications you need (microsoft office, itunes etc)
5. Then you use that drive imager like Norton Ghost to image the drive.

This is how it works:
After re-formatting windows and installing all you applications, the Drive Imager makes an exact copy of your drive, when you get a virus, the drive imager "BLAST" that image of you hard drive to your current one so it takes less time.

If you are catching a virus once a week, I strongly suggest better antivirus software ( AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot S & D are all free). A backup is not intended to save your operating system, but it is intended to save important files. You will always have to reinstall your operating system. Then, you can just transfer your folders back onto your fresh install of your OS.

use something like norton ghost or drive image to backup your drives, it will restore your drive in a matter of 3 hours to right where you left it. and you have serious problems with security if you're getting viruses that often. get a firewall... and don't just let any program out on the internet because it wants to. get an anti-virus program if you need a free one, go to www.grisoft.com

You need to tell us what kind of back-up it is. Did you just drag the files over, or did you use software such as Dantz Retrospect?
