A respirator or ventilator pumps air into and out of a patient's airway and lungs. It is a mechanical substitute for normal breathing. The machine uses pressure to pump in the air and allows a rest between each pump so the air can be exhaled.

The machine has to be attached to the patient and this is done via one of three methods:
an endotracheal tube (a tube via nose and throat or mouth and throat)
a tracheostomy ( a surgical opening in the neck and an inserted tube)
a face mask

During most surgical procedures, the respirator is connected via the endotracheal tube. This tube will be removed once you are awake and alert enough to breathe on your own. After it is removed, you may experience a slightly sore or and scratchy throat for a few days. Good luck with your surgery!
