Hi, I just acquired a 78 Chevy C30 with a 454 big block. It runs a little rough at first start. I runs decently but could use a good tune up. What should I look for on the engine and what should I tune up on the car. I was looking into getting a EFI conversion kit? Going to do new exhaust and intake for better mpg too. Anything specific to look into on the manuel trans?

Besides the basic plugs, wires, etc. a weak point on Chevy engines is the timing chain and gears. The factory cam gear is aluminum and fiberglass and the teeth are prone to breaking. Don't worry about the gas. Chevy changed to unleaded capable engines in 71.

if its a 1978 first thing u have to remember is that it was made for leaded fuel so if u use unleaded no in no time ull havta redo the heads but as is for now idd personaly just pull the plugs do a compression check put in new plugs and wires and dist cap and rotor if compression check is ok that is forget the efi unless ur going to redo the engine as far as the trans gos replace the oil look 4 any forin stuff if its shifting good i wouldent worry much but do urself a favor remove the inspection cover and check 4 oil leaks if oil gets on the clucth it might start sliping and the a clucth job aint far behind hope this helps and ps: good truck ur lucky good luck

It depends on how it's been maintained but you should use Gunk motor flush and change the oil. Then change plug wires, plugs, points, condensor, distributor cap,and PCV valve.Clean and lube the carb inside and out.Gas additive, carb spray and maybe some Marvel Mystery Oil.Check for vacuum leaks.Change the coolant, tranny fluid, and change and/or repack the wheel bearings.Check the brakes.Check the old tranny fluid for metal flakes or shavings. All of these thing are fairly inexpensive if you shop around by phone. If you need any help get a Hanes or Chiltons manual. They cost like $15.00 and should tell you anything you want to know about repairs.PS:It's gonna suck the gas.

hey if i was you, all that i would do is change the plugs, plug wires, dristributer cap, rotor button, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and mabe the thermostat if its been setting for a while. this sounds like a lot, but really its not probally be less than a $100 and about a few hours of your time. as far as upgrades go for fuel mileage, ha forget that, about 12 mile to the gallon is all that your going to get with a 454. as far as the manual tranny goes, its either broke or it aint. good luck, i like them year trucks think you willl too.

I surely have the comparable undertaking with MAF. have been by way of 2 in 2 years, and examine Engine easy nevertheless comes on. Am thinking it it would desire to be a leak someplace it is triggering the undertaking, no longer the MAF itself.
