Xbox Live itself is free. You will be a Silver Member and can use Xbox Live, but not the Gold-Member features like Match Making.
If you bought the Premium package (not the core) you will get a 1 month free Trial for Xbox Live Gold.
Or with some games, there is a free Gold Membership for a certain time (e.g. Gears of War or the Live Vision Cam have a free Gold Membership for some time).
If you don't have a credit card, buy a prepaid subscription card or let someone else buy it for you as a gift...

Buy a new game. It will have a free trial in it for the gold membership. However, XBOX Live is already free with a silver membership. Gold membership has no limitations

You can't, but you can get Xbox Live SILVER membership for free.. Just get on http://www.xbox.com and register your gamertag or do it on your Xbox 360 and sign into Silver to receive updates, and chat, and download from the marketplace (if you have points from credit card or point cards..)
But you can't play games with others and such, but you can buy Gold by buying a subscription from your local game store or upgrading and entering your credit card.. GL
