The windows software (or any os) normally takes up 5 gb space of ur hard disk. This space is not shown when u go to properties. For eg., my 40 gb hard disk shows only 34.5 gb when i check.
Moreover, when u do partition (i assume u hv 2 drives), a small space is lost for it. But this space is usually only in mbs. u better consult ur seller for the other 5 gb.
ram is largly affected by softwares like antivirus. as it shows 448 mb, i think its not any problem bcoz, next to 256, u hv 512 mb in ram. But its always better to check it with the seller too.

The dealer might have stripped you intentionally and thinks you will not turn up again. Ask a qualified technician for his advice and show him the laptop. Get his opinion and ask all questions you feel you should have an answer to.
Then, you take the laptop to the dealer. Better still, take the technician with you to the dealer, so that he can answer the difficult questions for you. But anyway, that did not happen right, so kick that b@$t@*d's @$$. Good luck.

I expect you've been into My Computer and seen Local Disk (C:), then right clicked it and seen the properties, haven't you? If that's showing you a 25gb hard drive, you have clearly been done. Go back pdq to where you bought it.
It might be, of course, that perhaps you are misinterpreting what you're seeing; still go back and ask 'em to explain it.
Good Luck!

as a lap top normally only has one hard drive slot this sounds like the primary hard drive has been partitioned in to two drives. not a bad thing. keep your personal data on the second partition or second drive and leave the operating system and your programs to the primary or C: drive. this will help should your drive fall victim to one of the oldest hard drive viri out in the wild the one that ends up knocking out your c: drive so that you thing your drive is dead. there is a tool to fix that type of virus attack go to www.grc.com and look for it (i forget the name of the tool and the name of the virus. however keep the tool on a floppy or USB flasy drive and you can always recover your C: drive if that type of attack happens.
as for the total space issue that sounds right to me a 60GB hard drive when formatted would be around the 50GB range give ort take a fem GB.
the 512MB RAM specified may be the total listed for your system of which your graphics chip is using 64MB (if my mental arithmetic is correct) that 64MB may be in addition to the chip or cards own memmory to improve overall system display functions.
and is normal in a desktop system to allow a small amount of system ram capacity to be dedicated for use by the graphics processor to use if the GPU needs it.
for example my GPU in my desktop system has 512MB of its own RAM however it needs for optimal performance upto 256MB of system RAM in addition to its 512MB.
as i said it is normal, however the system should have stated that clearly on the packaging or literature supplied or even in the readme file on the system discs.
I hope that clears up the mystery.
good luck

Have you put any anti-virus protection systems on as they can take up space? If not, take it back to where you bought it from and ask for an exchange or the remaining space you bought it for? They can insert extra RAM with a chip or memory card. Good luck.

You might have been ripped off with the hard drive aspect, but a good place to look about why hard drives are smaller than advertised can be found here:
http://compreviews.about.com/od/storage/a/ActualHDSizes.htm
as to why your computer is reporting less RAM can be found here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060713082252AAvQL0m
I think you were not cheated on your RAM, its just a system error in reporting it to you.
