There are several benefits and negatives of circumcision.

Benefits: From a hygeine standpoint it is cleaner. As an uncircumcised male who washes under the foreskin every day, I can absolutely tell you a circumcised penis by virtue of design is cleaner.

Studies have shown a link between circumcision and penile cancer. Circumcision apperently cuts the risk of penile cancer to virtually zero (lending strong credence to the idea that such cancer, much like cervical cancer, is predominantly caused by a virus or bacteria). However, proper washing of the foreskin can reduce the risk of penile cancer in an uncircumcised male to equivalent levels.

Recent studies have also shown that circumcised males have a significantly lower risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases than their uncircumcised counterparts. While nothing is safer than abstinance or using a condom, for men who have unprotected sex, circumcision can be a benefit.

Circumcision also exposes the glans of the penis and is found to be more "attractive" in some socities (right or wrong is another story, but it is widespread for pretty much entirely cosmetic reasons in the US, Canada, South Korea, and Australia).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disadvantages: Circumcised men have been shown to have had a decrease in overall penile sensitivity compared to uncircumcised men. Measuring "pleasure" is a difficult thing to do, as is measurinmg anything two people will feel. The response to a stimuli varies in intensity with every person. That said, men who have had a circumcision later in life, particularly after becoming sexually active, have almost consistantly reported a decrease in overal sensitivity of the glans and inner foreskin. This is due to keratinization of both, in which they basically become a bit leathery (this process is also why they serve as a better barrier to disease).

Circumcision is, contrary to what people say, a painful procedure. Though today they tend to sedate a patient or numb the area with a local anesthetic, the recovery period *after* the operation can vary based on the individual from mildly uncomfortable to incapacitatingly painful. Usually a physician or surgeon will prescribe pain medication if the operation is carried out past infancy/childhood.

Some studies, not entirely accepted nor discredited, have shown a link between circumcision and interference with mother-son bonding. For whatever reason the strong dose of pain a newborn can experience if circumcised without any anesthetic (which used to be the case all the time though these days is rare) alters the brain chemistry of the baby and makes it more resistant to fully bond with his mother. As such, later in life, this can lead to problems. I personally doubt the validity of such claims, since you'd see much weaker mother-son bonds in the United States than you do (in fact the mother-son relationship is supposed to be one of the strongest in American society).

Circumcision is also an operation and, like all operations, carries a certain risk of failure and complication. Though this risk is very very VERY small, it is still present and there have been documented cases of circumcisions gone terribly wrong which result in the partial or total loss of the penis itself.

A circumcised penis is unattractive to some (just as a circumcised one is attractive to Americans/South Koreans/Canadians). Particularly in Europe where non-religious circumcision is concidered out of the norm, an uncircumcised penis is more readily accepted in countries like the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria etc... as well as much of Asia (India, China, Japan) and New Zealand (for whatever reason, the rate of circumcision in NZ declined much earlier than in Australia such that most New Zealanders are uncircumcised).

You are a foolish if you hear or agree the genital mutilation cult's lie. Circumcision totally had no benefit include health or hygiene at all. The researches of circumcision benefits always had the weakness that could only be seen by sharp thinking people. 70-80% of world's male population aren't circumcised. If you believed the God,you must think this sentence : "If the circumcision really very good & the God care its follower, why did the God give the foreskin to the newborn males?" All things that the God created are very useful to the end of the things' live. Genesis 1:31 "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." The circumcision promise between Abraham & God is fulfiled by Jesus' holy blood (for those who believed Jesus only). If you are male & was circumcised before 20 years old,you should hush your self because you don't feel real feeling of being intact. The real feeling of being intact could be felt when you are 20 years old or later because the sexual functions of foreskin are activated at the age of 20 years old or later. I don't hope you to trust me because it is your decision,I only help what I can do to open your eyes about intact male's benefit.

Male circumcision is the cutting round and removal of the foreskin of the penis. It is a very beneficial operation which is commonly performed routinely on baby boys, although a man can be circumcised at any age. Local or general anaesthetic makes circumcision a painless procedure and healing takes only a week in babies and about three weeks for a fully grown man. A circumcised penis looks different from an uncircumcised one in that the head and groove are always exposed and the head itself develops to be larger and has a more pronounced rim which stands out more prominently. Circumcised men enjoy many benefuts by comparison with those who remain uncircumcised. The benefits of circumcision include better hygiene, comfort, appearance to women, self-esteem, and FAR better sexual sensation. The female partner of a circumcised man also experiences a range of important benefits as a result of his circumcision. These benefits include lower likelihood of bacterial and fungal infections, less risk of cervical cancer, elimination of any smell from her partners penis, more attractive appearance of her partners penis, FAR more sensation during intercourse, due to the larger more defined penis head of a circumcised man and the fact that it is fully exposed throughout the sexual act and much greater pleasure and ability to reach orgasm during intercourse, due to the movement of the tightly stretched shaft skin on the penis sliding against her clitoral and labial areas. For maximum benefit, the circumcision should be tight, with all surplus skin removed so that the groove behind the penis head is clear at all times and the remaining shaft skin is drawn smoothly back from the groove, even when the penis is soft. There are no disadvantages to circumcision, although some people who do not know the facts may say that there are! All men should be circumcised, for their own benefit and for the benefit of the women they associate with.

LOL @ponysteel: who told you that b/s about women having FAR more pleasure during intercourse when the man is cut? i can only say LOL. its exactly the same, the penis is the same when its erect and inside of a woman. do you really think some extra skin makes a woman feel _less_? i dont know who told you that but its not true..

and whoever said that.. its also not true that sex is painless because the foreskin is gone.. ???? if anything, its easier for the penis to glide with a foreskin but there is no significant difference really

im a girl btw so i dont know what its like for guys. i only wanted to respond to the things that have been stated about a girl's feelings..

The answers to these questions regarding circumcision or the lack thereof have become redundant, and have become a stomping ground for pro-circumcision and anti-circumcision proponents to offer their preachings and strong beliefs. I have put in my two cents regarding this very controversial subject on quite a few posted questions, but I refuse to become militant about it...for either side. On the contrary, I base my answers on what the individual feels is the right choice for them. What I do tell men or boys who are considering circumcision as a life choice is to look introspectively into the real reasons for their choice. If the choice is because of health related issues, by all means do what's best for you. If the choice is related to an aesthetic issue......you have every right to do with your body as you please, as long as you are happy with the results. People.....we as individuals have the right to choose what is best for US......whether or not the rest of society thinks otherwise.
I have agreed with Maple in several of her interventions....because there are too many over-zealous people who would make you think that to be uncircumcised is something to be seen as disgusting, ugly, and creates a health risk. In this sense I agree with Maple......not every uncircumcised man has a hygiene issue, and not every uncircumcised man has an STD or poses a threat as far as somekind of disease is concerned. If that were the case, 85% of European women would be dying of somekind of sexual transmitted disease. That doesn't mean that someone shouldn't get circumcised.....Hey, if you feel like snipping off the foreskin to feel more attractive to opposite sex.....go for it! I'm just trying to say.....don't put down guys like myself, who after much thought and research have decided that being uncircumcised is the best choice for them. I know that Pony Steel and SCUBA have their reasons and their beliefs, and I respect their point of view and their choices. I just really hope that the people for or against circumcision........instead of being adamant and militant about pushing someone to one choice or other, that they will just supply the facts......and let the person asking the question reach their own conclusions and make their own choices. In the end, they will make the choice THEY feel is the best for them.
I chose to keep myself natural (Uncircumcised) and I am very happy I did.....but that's me.
Best of Luck!

Cool Planet has it backwards - the ratio is closer to about 87% of the males in the world have natural penises, with only 13% circumcised! Basically the procedure is done in Muslim and Jewish households worldwide and in the USA, Australia, and the Philipines. In these areas the procedure became popular as a "cure" for masturbation - it didn't work. Then the pro-circ people declared it more "hygienic" - but any man with an intact penis knows that it can be kept clean quite easily. With education, the rate of non-religious circumcisions has fallen dramatically in the last decade, and the practice will probably die out in a few more years. Many doctors now refuse to do infant genital mutilation.

The only advantage to circumcision is a very narrow one - men living in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV/AIDS is extremely common and condom use is culturally taboo can cut their risk from truly appalling to merely awful by getting circumcised. This has no relevance to other parts of the world, where condoms are accepted and heterosexual transmission of the disease rare. The high rate of HIV among drug abusers is from dirty needles, not from having intact penises!

The disadvantages are many:
--it hurts! Even if a baby is too young to remember it, it still hurts. There are also risks - each year a few boys are so mangled by this barbaric procedure that their entire penises are amputated and they are changed into "girls". A few will die.
--it cuts down on sexual pleasure in two ways, both by removing one of the most sexually sensitive areas of the penis and by causing the gradual desensitization of the glans (head) when it rubs against clothing.
--It also cuts down on sexual pleasure for the female partner. A cut penis is harsh and blunt, not smooth and gliding like an intact penis.
--the constant rubbing of the glans on clothing can be painful even years after the fact. A contributor to this forum who was cut as a child 50 years ago is now trying to "restore" his foreskin. It may not be as good as an original, but it will cut his discomfort if he goes through with the years-long process.
--many cut men are so desensitized that they cannot climax through intercourse, so sexual relations have to be interrupted so the man can masturbate. This is hard on relationships, as the woman feels she is at fault for not being able to satisfy her man, when in fact it's HIS butchered penis that is causing the problem.

There is no non-fictional reason for a man living in a developed country to have this done or for anyone to cut their infant sons - indeed, some Jews are now refusing to have their sons ritually mutilated. (Good for them!)

Circumcision is a small surgery to remove you foreskin(skin surrounding the tip of you penis). About 87% of toatal males undergo circumcision every year in the whole world.

It is really painless. The whole surgery takes 20-25 minutes and you will be discharged the same day.

There are 2 advantages: Sex can be done less painlessly. You can save yourself from STDs even though u dont use condoms.

THERE IS NO DISADVANTAGE

CIRCUMCISION IS VERY BENEFICIAL, its cleaner, healthier and several prestigious research institutions have proved that circumcised men have less risk of contracting STD's such as AIDS-HIV, syphilis or herpes.

Uncircumcised penises are difficult to keep clean, and more prone to infections and penile cancer, studies have shown.
A circumcised penis is naturally clean and virtually free from urinary infections. You will not have to worry again with careful washing of your penis.

Is it NOT true that the AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) does not recommend circumcision. They simply say they leave the decision to parents. But recently, and specially after the recent studies by the US National Institutes of Health, the AAP has been discussing if it may be necessary to change their policy and recommend circumcision to all newborns as they used to do, so in the future we may see that the AAP advocates circumcision again.
Have a look at: http://www.baby-health.net/articles/381.html

About STD's:

As I said, several studies carried out by prestigious research bodies have proved that uncircumcised penises are more prone to infections and contraction of STD's, including AIDS-HIV. It has been confirmed that circumcised men are up to 70% less likely to be infected than those who are uncircumcised. Have a look at this site: http://www.torontodailynews.com/index.php/HealthNews/2006121404Circumcision

As for women, studies also show that circumcision also protects female partners from AIDS-HIV and other STD's. Browse this article: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2006/02_08_06.html

About sensitivity of a circumcised penis:

NO medical or physiological study has ever shown that circumcision reduces sensitivity, opposed to common belief. It is completely FALSE that circumcision reduces penis sensitivity. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) confirms this on their web site; have a look at: http://www.aap.org/pubed/zzzjzmemh4c.htm

Circumcision is an easy and nowadays *painless* procedure, which has many benefits, and virtually no risks.
Circumcision is NOT an amputation. Circumcision is NOT comparable at all to female circumcision, which is something completely different.

Circumcision rates are INCREASING nowadays, both in the United States and overseas. Many African, Asian and Latin American countries with little circumcision tradition are starting to promote the procedure to help to reduce the AIDS-HIV infection rates.

Finally, this site has a lot of useful and *unbiased* information. Make sure you have a good look: http://www.circinfo.net
