Because when the Flourscent gas fives off light it bounces in odd directions making for weird distribution of light. The odd shape makes it so that the light is even and more natural. However, there are now normal looking energy saving bulbs. Wikipedia has a great article on this.

there made like a coil so they dont stick together but you can get normal looking bulb that conserv energy at a local Home Depot

who cares? Are you going to look at it? No because you will go blind, their purpose is to light, not to make you go "oh how pretty"....go stare at a light bulb
