Emo: Like Goth, only much less dark and much more Harry Potter.
I'm not Emo, I just hate myself.

First off, I think that people ignorant people assume that emo is one thing when it is in fact a world away. Like your little emo joke. Not funny in any way and a completely ignorant thing to say. Why don't you go to the jokes and riddles section. Everyone over there is feeling awfully ignorant tonight as well.
But just to make sure you know what emo is instead of going off making lame jokes about it, emo is not just a type of music, a style of clothing, and it isn't even about self destructive behavior. Emo is a way of thinking. You don't have to listen to emo music or dress like an "emo kid" or cut yourself to be emo. Most people with depression could be considered "emo". Emo is just a shortened version for emotional which is what any normal people should be. So called "emo"'s are in fact more the people who wear their emotions on their sleeve which is in most cases more healthy than hiding them.
Emo music is just music that expressed sad or angry emotions.
Emo clothing has not a thing to do with "emo". It's just a style that has branched off from punk and become slightly more girly (which, in my opinion is great... We need more cross dressers),
And cutting is just a way of letting those emotions out. It turns your pain from emotional pain to physical which, in most cases, is much more bearable.
Oh yes, and I'm not stereotyping or anything, but every emo that I have met has wanted to kill all the ignorant jackasses out there.
So watch what you say out there in the real world.
Emo's are feisty.

Emo's in my view, are gothISH with a hint of Harry Potter and Gayness.
Seeking attention because they are so neglected, they should harden the **** up, get over hating their father, let their normal hair colour come back and stop cutting themselves :) oh yeah and the dudes should stop shaving their legs and kissing other dudes.
I love your comment "I wish my grass was so Emo it would cut itself" . lol

i like that big long explanation to what emo is and is not. it's fairly informative and boring. the fact of the matter is that if that definition of 'emo' is accurate or not, it doesn't matter, the public has changed that view or what emo is. a subgenre of hardcore? perhaps at one time. Now it's people who are well off and can do nothing more than b**** about their own problems, pretend they're non-conformist and all look alike, and cut themselves (and they cut their own hair... and suck at it).
it's like ricers... used to mean people modifying imports and now refers to people who modify any sort of car with ridiculous looking spoilers and bodykits, etc. instead of performance.
oh, my opinion on emo?
should suck a bullet and spare us the whining

I thought I'd give it a try...
What Emo Is And Some History.
Emo is short for emotive hardcore. It's a DIY music style (not a shitty fashion) that started in the 80's. Emo follows (but is not restricted to) the lines of hardcore. Hardcore is a subgenre of punk, therefore, so is emo. The first emo band is often credited to Rites Of Spring. They played with hardcore punk rock energy (as the members were previously involved with hardcore bands) and lots of emotion through their performance and with their audience. Their lyrics seem to have important views about life and a sense of deepness.
"Emo" As A Term.
The term "emo" was generated as an insult to people in the hardcore scene that liked these bands. An emo band's performance on stage (can include crying/moaning/etc. their lyrics and various other events) probably made them look "weaker" to the hardcore kids, which is (why I think) "emo" was directed as an insult.
What Screamo is.
Screamo has evolved from emo. This music style invloves more screaming and often has more melodic breakdowns. Screamo is still emo, therefore follows its guidelines.
What Emo Is Not.
Emo is not short for emotional. Emo is not a fashion. Emo is not "XxXxXxXOMMMFFGZZZZ IM LYKE, SO DEPRESSED!XxXxX!!!1!!111 IM GONNA SLIT MY WRISTZZZZZZZ...LOL..XxXxX xX" Emo was not mainstream (because it was DIY). Emo has nothing to do with being depressed, shitty metaphors, or suicide. Emo is not whiney, bullshit music sung by pubescent males that haven't dropped their balls yet.
Real Emo Bands: Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, Funeral Dinner, Gray Matter, Hot Cross, Off Minor, Indian Summer, Sleepytime Trio, etc...
Screamo Bands: Saetia, Orchid, Pg. 99, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, Love Like...Electrocution, Angel Hair, Antioch Arrow, Majority Rule, Usurp Synapse, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, etc...
Record Labels Known To Produce Important Emo Bands: Discord Records, Level-Plane Records, Magic Bullet Records, Ebullition Records, etc...
NOT Emo Bands: Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessional, From First To Last, Bright Eyes, Simple Plan, The Used, Senses Fail, etc...
thats what emo is/ now everyone stop using you sterotypes that you got from your friends and grasp reality

Why haven't all of the emo's killed themselves into oblivion yet?
Oh, yes, because they are nothing but posers trying to fit into a non-conformist conformation.
People are idiots.
