When going into a turn, instead of just pressing the direction you want to go, also press the "R" trigger on your device. This should start a sliding drift. Now while holding "R", quickly wiggle the control pad left and right until sparks appear on your kart. I don't exactly remember if the sparks are first blue, then red or other way around. However as soon as the sparks change color, let go of "R" and you should boost forward.

For more details read your instruction booklet.

When the turn is right. Turn your trigger to the right, then press 'R' (one of the top buttons). Then wiggle your control stick as fast as you can. When the color of your slide changes 3 times, there you can let go and it will give a boost. But it is a waste of time because the time you do it, everyone goes ahead of you and the turbo boost isn't fast enough.
