There are more judges in the United States justice system than can be counted. There are 9 Supreme Court justices. Below them there are 50 US Appeals Courts (Circuit Courts) with differing numbers of judges on each Appeals court, depending upon the population and number of cases. There are at least 12 or more US Appeals Court in each Circuit. There are at least 11 Circuit Courts. Below those courts there are US Trial Courts (District Courts). There are around 5 district courts per Appeals Courts, making probably more than 60 District Courts in the United States. On each District Court there are a lot of judges and Magistrate Judges, more than 12 in each District Court.
Don't forget there are the same three-tiered court systems for each US State and the District of Columbia (Washington DC). So as you can see, each of the 50 states plus DC have differing numbers of judges depending on the number of trial and appellate courts and the differing numbers of judges and magistrates in each court. Phew! That's a lot of judges!
