The term racket comes from the Italian world ricatto (blackmail) and is also used as a pejorative term for legitimate businesses. Typically, this usage is based on the example of the "protection racket" and indicates that the speaker believes that the business is making money by selling a solution to a problem that it created (or that it intentionally allows to continue to exist), specifically so that continuous purchases of the solution are always needed. Keep in mind Symantec (Norton) is located across the street from Apple. Look it up. PC has a million viruses, Mac has none. Go figure.

I believe you're right and that it is more common than we realize. Like the people who made Spy Sweeper are the same ones that made the CoolWebSearch malware. But silly me I bought the thing anyway for $30. It does get rid of the others, too, though.

Do you believe that Norton AntiVirus creates viruses and sends them out over the Internet? Or that they could, with one foul swoop, remove any and all viruses, worms, etc. that plague the Internet?
If one were to agree with this, then one would have to admit that Norton AntiVirus is indeed an illegal racket.

Perhaps anti-virus producers do act bad as you think, or perhaps anti-virus sellers made agreement with Microsoft in order to sell solutions for bugs MS intentionally put in, I can't know.
But you're example "fa acqua da tutte le parti", to keep using Italian expressions: older Mac was hit by 14 viruses only, current Mac (Unix based) by no one; but that's also apply for Linux (which on desktop is more used than Mac), as well as other Unix-like OSs; simply, Microsoft systems by security point of view are colander compare to Mac and Linux. The different basis from which those OSs are developed and the way they keep up to date are by themselves clarifying on this issue.

You thesis is one of the oldest and most dis-credited "urban legends" there is.
Do you also believe that doctors intentionally infect people so they can charge to cure?
Do you also believe that tow-truck drivers intentionally cause accidents so they can charge to tow away the wreaks?
Do you believe abortion clinics encourage women to become pregnant so they can sell abortions?
They anti-malware industry has quite enough to do detecting other peoples viruses. Why would they create more? That would just make more work for themselves!

Is that the same for condom manufacturers? After all, there's STDs out there and condoms offer a form of 'protection' against these.
But AntiVirus type mfgs, did not 'invent' all viruses, worms, trojans etc. It's a hostile (internet) world out there. Do you jump in with or without 'protection'?
Personally, I don't use these products, I just have a firewall, and check for 'bad' things periodically, -after they may happen.

Good point. You'd be surprised how many companies make money off of things that break on purpose.
Have you ever heard of planned obsolescence?
