i'm looking for a versatile guitar i can use to play anything from metallica, with a heavy, full overdrive tone, to pink floyd with an atmospheric kinda tone. i play an ibanez right now, and i'd like to get another, but i'm not sure as to which one. any suggestions?

I would suggest something equipped with both single-coil and double-coil ("humbucking") pickups, because there are fundamental differences and one really isn't a substitute for another. Several companies make these; the Musician's Friend website lets you sort guitars by pickup configuration, so you can start there. You might also consider something with only humbuckers, but ones that are equipped with coil taps, which approximate the sound of single-coil pickups (such as the Ibanez Jet King). You could even have coil taps installed on your current guitar.

Go to a guitar store and start playing. I like jacksons but thats just me it is all about what feels right to you. there is no best guitar its all about what you can do with it. Les pauls are very versatile, I don't use them cause they just don't sound right with me playing them and don't feel right to me when I am playing them. I would suggest a les paul, and a telecaster. Past that anyones guess do what feels right to you.
