You want the left most point of the cross hair to be touching the center line (thus placing the cross hair on the right side of center). And you want the cross hair to come down about one full length. The power is the most important thing.
Hold backward on the right analog to start the power bar. Now you want to let the power bar go all the way up, and come back down until it's almost gone. Don't let it go all the way down. Then flick the right analog back up to actually kick it.
Now, the important thing to remember is that it's not a sure-fire thing that you're going to get it back, but it does put the ball in the best position to get it back.

Onside kicks have less then a 5% probability in the new madden from what I have been hearing on the web. Sorry to rain on your parade dude.
