This is all you need.
AVG Free (an antivirus that is completely free and much much better than anything Norton and McAfee have to offer)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
Zone Alarm Free (an excellent, easy to use, completely cutomizable firewall with a anti-spam/spyware built-in)
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
These two softwares (even though they are free) are among the best. I have been using them for years and have yet to have a single problem with either one of them. They are both very small (they won't take much RAM and slow down your computer, especially if you are concerned with gaming), very efficient, and fast (won't take forever to start up your computer). They will run quitely inthe background and both are completely free of any sort of advertisement or any spyware of their own. The links I provided are directly from their site so they are clean.
If you want to spend money then the single best solution containing everything will be, no doubt, Kaspersky.
http://usa.kaspersky.com/products/
This company is Russian based and it is definitely worth the money.
I did this sort of a thing for living and we have had several viruses (that were embedded in a compressed file or an executable) that ONLY Kaspersly picked up. McAfee and Norton both failed.
As for other handy software,
Firefox browser (instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer which is crap)
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
it is much more stable, much more secure, and very nice to use with awesome features...and free.
VLC Media Player (as opposed to Windows Media Player)
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
A very small, very nice, open-source multimedia player which will play 99% of audio and video formats out there. Completely free, with no spyware, adware, advertisements, AND it has al of the codecs built-in so that you will never have to search for some weird codec, download, install, and clutter your computer. They are all built-in the program. Has some nice features, such as jumping (setting up your own lengths) and taking screenshots.

1. Yes, because some brands install lots of useless software onto the computer that you really do not need, while others do not. 2. Mac does not get viruses because nobody makes them for Mac. Mac users make up a VERY small percentage of the market, with Windows being #1, which is why all viruses are usually written for Windows. Mac does not come with any security. 3. Linux is always best but it can't do anything, not enough software has been scripted for Linux. Therefore, a PC with Windows Vista is your best bet. 4. Don't get a Mac they are garbage. Nothing but bad experiences with them ... 5. Dell XPS is a very good laptop. It is reliable, lightweight, and you can spec it to however you'll be using it. It is uniquely you, and for the price, you can't go wrong. My Dell has been very good to us. Good luck.

I would highly recommend Hijack This! because if you ever have spyware or something else, that program will keep a log of all your processes, which people on forums will ask for when you ask a question on there. I would also get some kind of virus protection. Personally, I wouldn't go for McAffee because I think they're kind of annoying. Ad-Aware SE personal isn't too bad. I might also recommend Spybot:Search and Destroy. Those are all I have for maintaining my comp.
I would check out www.annoyances.org if you EVER have a windows problem.
