well the applause from the audience says it all for me.
Getting better at singing can be achieved by any one who wants to do it.
A few pointers
learn how to use your abdomen in singing. Try flexing your abs and breathing in through your mid riff. now use the stress in your stomach to push the air out. You'll find that you can sing much louder and deeper without stressing your voice.
learn to hold a tone best way to do this is to try to sing to the tone of an instrument i.e. a piano
get the feel of a song. Every song has a certain emotion that's in the song (except maybe for childrens songs)
the key to a great performance is to express the emotions hidden in a song e.g. you don't sing about heartbreak in the same way as you would a love song. this is pretty hard as no one can teach you it takes a great deal of empathy and feeling.
Last but not least
practice, practice, practice

Well, you know if you're a good singer if honest people tell you you are. Or if you audition for something singing and you make it.
And as far as getting better... Lessons are a good route to take. I used to but when my voice matured my vocal teacher got frusterated and quit. Ugh. But lessons work wonderfully.

take care of your throat and do not eat spices. at the same time always try to sing using your original voice
